Biodegradable Bemberg Lining
The Lining That Gives Itself Back
Bemberg™ is the trademark for a lining fibre made by Asahi Kasei in Japan from cotton linter — the short downy fibre that enfolds cotton seeds, obtained pre-consumer from the cottonseed-oil manufacturing process. It is biodegradable and compostable to two international standards. Polyester lining is permanent. Bemberg is not.

The Two Artefacts
One remains. One returns.
Persists for centuries. Returns to the earth.
A By-Product, Given A Second Life.
Bemberg is 100% cupro fibre made from cotton linter — the short downy fibre that enfolds cotton seeds, recovered as a pre-consumer material from the cottonseed-oil manufacturing process. It has been made by Asahi Kasei in Japan since 1931. The name is a trademark. The process is closed-loop. The engineering is Japanese in its patience.
Two Compostability Certifications. One Chemical-Safety Certification.
The fibre carries OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 for chemical safety on skin. It is certified compostable to EN 13432:2000 — the European standard for industrial-compost biodegradation — accredited under UNI CEI ISO/IEC 16929:2013 and tested by INNOVHUB-SSI. It is separately certified under OK Biodegradable MARINE by TÜV Austria for marine-environment biodegradation. A full Life Cycle Assessment was performed by ICEA in 2016. And the specific lot woven into House of Parvi pieces carries chain-of-custody documentation to Recycled Claim Standard 100.
Certified Compostable, Under The Right Conditions.
Under industrial-compost conditions to EN 13432, and in marine environments to OK Biodegradable MARINE, the fibre biodegrades. Asahi Kasei does not publish a fixed timeframe — biodegradation rate depends on temperature, moisture, and microbial conditions. What we can say plainly: at end of life the lining does not leave a permanent synthetic shell behind. The piece returns to earth on terms nature can accept.
Bemberg is dry-clean only. Every House of Parvi piece ships with a five-language washcare tag.
“The best lining is one you never notice — and one that never stays.”
